Next question,...is buying your train tix as you go cheaper than buying a multicountry pass or any of the other type of passes that they offer? This seems to be an expense that needs alot of research to make it the least expensive that you can.

Thanks for the response! We only have a little over a week in Italy so we're only going to be going to go to a few cities. One thing I was wondering is if you think it is better to pay mostly with credit card or cash while traveling? Also, would you advise a backpack or suitcase for 3 weeks of travel?
